На всем протяжении работы Ассоциации Телекоммуникационной Промышленности (TIA) термин "телекоммуникационный шкаф" (TC - telecommunication closet) изменен на термин "телекоммуникационное помещение" (TR - telecommunications room). Это изменение было произведено с целью показать значимость звездообразной топологии и телекоммуникационных помещений.
Телекоммуникационное помещение весьма желательно для СКС, а размещение телекоммуникационных кабелей, пассивного и активного оборудования в небольших шкафах (closets or small cabinets) считается устаревшим.
